Victoria and Albert Museum

One day, Debbie with me went to Victoria and Albert Museum, due to the Jewellery exhibition. It is the first museum that I have been to in London. The decoration is quite spectacular, and the style is Art Nouveau-an art term began in 18 century, and arrived the peak between 1890 to 1910. The hall on the ground floor is decorated with lots of sculptures and ceramic tiles with plant pattern. With regard to Jewellery exhibition, it included all the art terms, such as Baroque, Art Deco, as well as Contemporary Jewellery. Over 1,000 creations are performed in this exhibition. Unfortunately, it is not allowed to take pictures.

I am interested in the Contemporary Jewellery, even some of them are not understandable. Due to the technologies, the performance of creations are variable. The most special technique is aluminum dyeing- a difficult technique to use color on aluminum.

Assignment-Globalization

Summarize the main effects of globalization and discuss to what extent they are beneficial to design industry

International integration has become one of the most important aspects in the world. According to BBC news (2007), globalization has taken a key role and has been an unprecedented increased in prosperity in the last five decades, which is spring up from the United States and Europe to many other developing countries in Asia, such as China and India. The influences of globalization widely include economy, environment, communication, and culture. With regard to the design world, some people argue that the development of communication technology has resulted in culture impact making the world more homogenous (Hansen.M, 2001), and even affects design industry. The trends of design, not only have influence in one area, but also in the whole world. In this essay, I would like to look at previous research on the effects of globalization on economic aspect. Moreover, to what extent globalization is beneficial to my subject - design, will be considered.

A common viewpoint is that the influences of globalization are mainly positive. Economic integration, the most important influence of globalization of the world, “has been grown by trade, investment and money increasingly cross international borders”, said by Steve Schifferes(2007). Relying on exports and imports goods and service between countries, not only the quality increasing, but also cost cutting are happened in the competitions. In addition, due to the opening of international investment market, people could invest their money in stock, share and property in different areas in order to make profits and spread risk. Globalization has brought about many benefits of the world, and also this development is unavoidable. Alternatives to Economic Globalization (2003) reported that no individual or group of people could be able to stop globalization’s relentless occurrence. Globalization of the economic market brings lots of benefits due to the boom.

However, some people argue that the negative effects of globalization outweigh the positive. Abraham.K (2000), a Professor of Ethics and Director of SATHRI (South Asia Theological Research Institute), maintained that the global village increases the opportunities for people to enhance their life. But the dark side is that globalization is an exploitation and political oppression for the Third World. The developing countries struggle to eliminate poverty and go through by trade with the developed countries. They have established factories in the developing areas because of the cheap labour. Also the poor countries have to divert budget from education and social welfare in order to pay a lot of debt to rich countries. The low education level result people could not get a higher salary job, therefore, poor countries become poorer, and vice versa. “The average per capita income of the developed world is $2,400 and that of the developing countries $180” (Abraham.K, 2000). Moreover, global invest market includes extensive areas and the effects are complex, it is difficult for investors to control their investments. In the case of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis of American, the debts of property result the banks have deficits and strikes at invest market seriously. The price of American stock has dropped, and directly has negative effect in other countries. Obviously, the influences of globalization are widely and deeply.

Thanks to globalization, it is becoming easier to study overseas. In recent years, the number of international student studying in foreign countries has increased dramatically. Especially in UK, the number of new international applicants for entry in 2007 was 68,500, an increase of 7.8% on the previous year. The number of EU applicants rose by 33% (UCAS, 2007). With regard to the design area, due to the inspiration of the design histories of western world, people look forward to study design in London, Paris, Milan, also in North Europe – the countries that are famous on product design recently, such as Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The influence of the various western cultures, it increases the senses of aesthetics and creativity for designers, as well as the design styles could be multiple and infinite. Among the encouragement of attending international design competitions by school, which are looked at attentively by international famous brands, designers could have more opportunities to show their genius, and then be employed by multicultural companies. By influence of globalization, the creative industry market has developed init the majority of the world.

On the other hand, cultural identity is becoming unclear due to globalization. The famous brands, such as CHANEL, GUCCI and PRADA, are being operated around the world, and lead the trends of the design industry. Brand competition affects the number of local brands, and have a result of plagiarism. Beware. P (2007) described that the creative industries in UK lose 9 billion dollar a year from copyright infringement, and the Treasury loses 300 million dollar a year. In order to increase the sales volume and exist in high competitions, the local brands imitate the surface features of famous brands and affect the local culture. Traditional cultural products are not as popular as before. People, who can afford, would buy luxury foreign goods; others would buy the products which are fakes for following trades. Consequently, design homogeneity has happened. Due to the development of communication, it provides a fast, convenient and varied medium to surf around the websites for inspiration. However, as Bailey.J(2006) claim that taking good ideas to use on designer’s own sits and the law of intellectual property is not clear, thus the design are among a limitary protection.

Nowadays, international integration is changing the rules of human life. The combination of Sweden IKEA furniture, the Germany BMW car, and decoration with British BURBBERY is one of the multicultural life-style. Among the culture communication, more and more originality are encouraged and enrich the source of design. However, it is considerable that how designers improve their skills of creative working, in order to increase the value of products. In the high competition environment, only improving the uniqueness and the quality of products, the power of brands will be strengthened. As well as the policy improvement, the government in UK, also other countries are working hardly to advance culture and design industries, such as ‘The Good Design Plan’ of UK and ‘Developing- Culture Plan’ of Taiwan. At the same time of globalization, striving against the homogeneity is an important challenge. (1033 words)

  • Antwerp - tradition of cutting and trading the most precious gems began more than five centuries ago; the industry is now following the route of many other enterprises in the global market, shifting to the immense reserves of low-cost labor in India
  • more than 25,000 diamond workers were employed in the 1970s; today, less than 800
  • these gemstones were first found, polished and worn in India; today's rules of global trade are drawing the diamond industry back home
  • Antwerp cannot compete anymore; polishing can now be done in India for one-fifth of the labor cost
  • the most precious large white diamonds, are still worked in Antwerp, rather than in Asia, because of expertise and quality control

A Chapter of A Book Connected with My Subject II

My Favorite Period of Jewellery Design -Art Nouveau (1875-1919)

Background
  • electricity and photography were nascent sciences
  • innovative technologies were bursting upon an advancing Western world
  • first fine art to be called "modern"

Movement

  • the leaders: the critic John Ruskin and William Morris
  • against: the encroaching modern age, the shoddy, machine-made products
  • designs: interiors, architecture, furniture, books, metalwork, and jewelry
  • style: romantic, not rigid, return to earlier, purer aesthetics and technique
  • forms: stone-set pieces which including brooches, pendants, bracelets, necklace, hatpins, and rings
  • material : polished stones, opal, lapis lazuli, and rose quartz were set into silver or gold

Reflection

I really like this period of design. Inspiration by flowers, plants, rattans, and birds in nature, the shape with the creations, such as furniture, and jewelry are very elegant. My favorite designer is Alphonse Musha; the style of his paintting are warm colours, graceful lines, and a lot of long curly hair settled in whole page.

The Draft of Assignment Two

The advantage of a ‘surveillance society’ far outweigh the drawbacks’ To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is generally agree that the percentage of crimes has increased continuously nowadays. According to a report released by the Division of Public Safety (Dailllini.com), the crimes of robber and sexual assault had increased 7% in 2004, also risen 6% in violent crime (BBC.com). In order to prevent the crimes, people have created a surveillance society; enable to observe the suspect behaviours, called CCTV. Since 1994, CCTV is used increasingly to police public morals and public order. Although some people consider that this kind of surveillance system lead people to feel uncomfortable, they do not want to be known where they are all the time. For example, average citizen is caught on CCTV cameras 300 times a day in UK (BBC.com) and they do not know how these organizations use this information. In this essay, I would like to talk about the advantages of observe system is more outweigh than the disadvantages which are mentioned above.

A common viewpoint is that CCTV did not decrease the rate of crimes; only 3% of crimes were solved by it (Guardian.com). However, some people argue that the CCTV has become an icon for security and politicians to prevent anti-social and undesirable behaviours, such as smoking, vandalism, and drunkenness. People would control their behaviours more when in front of cameras to earn respect from audience. In addition, the surveillance system is used to collect evidence by victims of domestic violence who conceal video cameras in their homes to protect themselves. CCTV also used in the kindergartens and hospitals to support covert surveillance of teachers and parents suspected of abusing children. Furthermore, Growth in the market of CCTV is estimated at 15% to 20% annually. Although the government has spent lots of money in it, the advantage is not only saving the money to train police but also reducing dangers for them. The budgets of police training and gratuity could be used on other construction.

Feedback of the Second Seminar

Before this seminar, I had a rained weekend for research the resource which are connected with CCTV, DNA database, and biometrics. I have read all links in Steve's blog and researched other relative websites. It is very useful that I got a lot of information that could be discussed on this seminar.I think that I done a very good research and preparation. However, I did not speak enough during the seminar and need to have an improvement next time. Fortunately, I listened other member's opinions very carefully and received opposite arguments that are real helpfully for my organization of thinking. I argued my opinion with some evidences and statistics, also mationed some future technology connected with biometrics. My grammar was not perfect, but I think my speach was understandable, and I kept my opinion movoing in the right direction.

A chapter of a book related to my subject.

'The history of Jewellery Design'

Origin
The origin of Jewellery Design has been retraced to
the most remote civilizations, about 3000BC. The richest garments and ornaments of burying the dead people, and the pictorial iconography —painting, sculpture, and mosaic offer sufficient evidences that jewellery were worn in various eras.

That prehistoric people who decorating their bodies before they thought to make something that could suggest clothing. Before precious metals were discovered, people who lived along the seashore decorated themselves with a great variety of shells, fish bones, fish teeth, and colored pebbles. On the other side, people who lived inland used the different materials from the animals when it had killed for food, such as reindeer antlers, mammoth tusks, and all kinds of animal bones. After, they had been improved more elaborate, and these materials were combined together with animal skins and bird feathers, provided various decorations.

This era of people transform their living from nomadic to a settled social order, and then birth of the most ancient civilizations. Most people lived along the banks of large rivers, and developed agriculture and animal husbandry. Indirectly, it led to the alluvial soil deposited minerals, first among which were gold and precious stones.

Over the years, the original jewellery forms of prehistoric times were multiplied for every part of the body. For the head there were crowns, hairpins, earrings, nose rings, lip rings, and earplugs; for the neck and torso there were necklaces, fibulae, brooches, belts, and watch fobs; also ankle bracelets, toe rings, and shoe buckles for the thighs, legs, and feet.

I believe that keeping beauty is a natural instinct of human. Thus, the decoration of jewellery and how to collect with clothes are interesting subjects that I look forward to research. And I also want to realize the differences between jewellery design style in every art period in this book.

Introduction

To what extent do you agree with we live in a world in which we are dangerously influenced by media images.

A common viewpoint that media is main medium for getting information in our life. Millions of people have access to TV, newspaper, magazine, and radio…etc. to carry a great deal of information anytime and anywhere. The information which is repeated and repeated affects people’s thinking and behaviours invisibly. Therefore, we could say that the media has been endowed with a responsibility for societal education. According to Akoijam Sunita (2008), media should take more responsibility when reporting news, to ensure that they do not repote underreported information to trick the consumer. They also need to ensure the public have been given enough space to think and make their intelligent choices. However, some people believe that media take a negative influence of society disorders. A mass of reports on celebrities and famous brands could affect consumer’s values. Moreover, sex and violence images which are repeated and repeated might act on teenager’s spirits. As the results, people must to weigh the pros and cons of information that they receive. In this essay, I would like to look at previous research connected to this topic specifically and mention the influence of society behaviours due to media images, and then look at solutions, which could help people take the dangerous influence away from the media.

  • Meaning of phrasal verb
  • Tense, especially past perfect
  • preposition
-Which of the grammar points you have problems with are more important for a) writing b) speaking c) both?
I think my grammar problem in writing is more important than speaking. People usually understand what I spoke, but not the same in writing.

-Do you think that doing lots and lots of grammar exercises is the best way to improve your grammar?
Yes, I think is the best way to improve my grammar, because I can find out what are the problems that I need to challenge.

-Can you think of any other activities that you could do without having to pick up a grammar book?
  • Do grammar exercises online.
  • Practice grammar skills in writing and speaking.
  • Reading articles is also a good way to be familiar with grammar.
-How do you think you've learnt the grammar you already know well?
I had done grammar exercise when I learnt it before. I considered the roles of
grammar before speaking.

-Can you find some online exercises to help you with your grammar weaknesses. Please put a link to anything you find, then do the exercise, and paste into your blog any sentences/phases you got wrong or would like to remember.

My feedback of seminar

Strong and weak points

Media is a big category of knowledge, I researched the questions on page 15 and also included some hidden questions.Due to I have gotten a lot of information, I think that the preparation of this seminar is not difficult.

In the aspect of speaking, I used the phrase to begin my sentences, but there were still some problems with grammar. I can not use correct
grammar very well without thinking when I speak. It is the most important part that I need to practice and practice. Also I need to increase the academic vocabulary in my seminar.

At the very start, I thought that 1 hour is too much to do the seminar and must be a ordeal to me. Surprisingly, every member in my group has a lot of opinions therefore we have not finished all topics on time. During the seminar, we were paying attention to listen other classmates' opinions, and gave feedback after they speak. Sometimes we agreed and gave addition opinions, and sometimes we argued the opposite viewpoints.

I think this
seminar is very useful because I got some opinions that I never thought before, and also had a chance to practice speaking.

Seminar

Today, we have done a seminar about The media/television. The aim of this seminar is to discuss Television viewing habits compare different countries, Television images, and The future for television and television viewers.

With regard to the television viewing habits, most of counties we researched have a higher percentage of children they watch television more than 3 hours every day than the pass period. Almost 50% of adult in Taiwan also spend one-three hours in watch TV every day. Unfortunately, the facts shows that most of people think television is very necessary in their life, and parents in Taiwan as television as babysitter. According to the reports of medical science, babies watch TV could result the injure of their brains, and also decrease their attention on studying. It is not only have bad influence of children’ health but also the ability of learning.

In Taiwan, the type of popular TV programs are changed from news, dramas to political-chat shows and shopping channels in the last two decades. It may possibly mean that people have more freedom of speech with polity and comment their government.

In term to the television images,we thought that most of the
images on TV did not show reality. They showed audience a kind of ideal life that people are seeking. This kind of stereotypes are often showed on TV,such as beautiful typically white women, desperately thin girls. And also with male, they may be set with a joker, a super action hero, or a rich business man.

Speaking about the media literacy,
the definition is help people to develop the skills that are necessary in media culture to think about what media is and how medias are worked; and also take greater responsibility for viewing choices and the use of electronic media, for the television viewers. The future for television, the high digital TV will be developed for people to watch TV more conveniently and efficiently. It is a trend that TV can connect with internet and watch TV any specific TV program anytime and anywhere.
